Surveying and Cows

After breakfast and devotions this morning, I headed with a group for a tour of the hydro plant. It was steep and muddy getting down there, but a nice and interesting facility. The waterfall was pretty and there were some Kenyan children swimming and fishing. We hiked up to the top of the dam to see the place where they take in water to pump up to the hospital. We also saw the sewer treatment plant. Then we hiked way up to the high side to see the water treatment plant. This is really the weak link in the process and is what they would like to expand. It’s been a hot, busy morning, so I’m enjoying a few minutes of quiet before lunch.

For lunch we had burritos and homemade ugali chips (nachos). I spent the afternoon being a rod-woman for the survey team. Despite the fact that it rained much of the afternoon, I had a lot of fun helping out. The scenery is just beautiful, so being outside is a treat in and of itself. The Kenyan children from the nearby school were very interested in what we were doing, and we often had several at a time who stopped to watch what we were up to. Some of the braver ones would ask us questions like “What are you doing?”, “What is your name?”, and the funniest from one boy, “Do you know Obama?”. At one point when the rain was pretty hard, we stopped under a bus stop to stay dry for a few minutes. When we turned around, there were three cows grazing just feet away from us, in the area where we had just been surveying!

For dinner, we were invited to the home of the dentist and his wife. Both are local to Kenya. She fixed us a yummy meal with spinach, mashed vegetables, pasta with pork, beef and potatoes, and a Kenyan style doughnut for dessert. The doctor told us some wonderful stories about how God has blessed the hospital and the work going on there.

I’m looking forward to the church service in the morning!
